Task 1 - Arthurian Legend Research

Do some internet research into the Arthurian Legend and summarise your learning here in this post with each other in a discussion. Make sure you tell us which website your information comes from (copy and paste it into your comment). Consider how reliable/authoritative the website is. Research as widely as possible. Think back to the lesson today where we did some reading about 'The Celts' as a result of what we were finding out about Arthurian Legend. Remember that typing variations of the King Arthur myth into Google will produce different search results (i.e. 'King Arthur', 'Arthurian Legend', 'Excalibur', 'The Sword in the Stone', etc.)

  1. I wasn't sure if we were allowed to copy and paste a summary off the internet so I just copied and paste a summary I found.

Arthur was the first born son of King Uther Pendragon and heir to the throne. However these were very troubled times and Merlin, a wise magician, advised that the baby Arthur should be raised in a secret place and that none should know his true identity.

As Merlin feared, when King Uther died there was great conflict over who should be the next king. Merlin used his magic to set a sword in a stone. Written on the sword, in letters of gold, were these words: "Whoso pulleth out this sword of this stone is the rightwise born king of all England." Of course all the contenders for the throne took their turn at trying to draw the sword, but none could succeed. Arthur, quite by chance, withdrew the sword for another to use in a tournament. Following this he became King.

He gathered Knights around him and fought back against the Saxons who, since the Romans left Britain, were slowly but surely taking the country over. After many great battles and a huge victory at Mount Badon the Saxons' advance was halted.

Arthur's base was at a place called Camelot. Here he built a strong castle. His knights met at a Round Table. They carried out acts of chivalry such as rescuing damsels in distress and fought against strange beasts. They also searched for a lost treasure, which they believed would cure all ills - this was the 'Quest for the Holy Grail'.

Under the guidance of Merlin, Arthur had obtained a magical sword from The Lady Of The Lake. This sword was called 'Excalibur" and with this weapon he vanquished many foes.

Queen Guinevere, Arthur's beautiful wife brought romance to the story while his equally beautiful half sister Morgan le Fay added a dark side.

Unfortunately, as peace settled over the country things turned sour within the court of Camelot and civil war broke out. In the final battle at Camlan both Arthur and Mordred, Arthur's traitorous nephew, were mortally wounded. Arthur was set upon a boat and floated down river to the isle of Avalon. Here his wounds were treated by three mysterious maidens. His body was never found and many say that he rests under a hill with all his knights - ready to ride forth and save the country again.

  2. This is a paragraph about the Arthurian Legend it is also linked to the Celts I found it on the website http://www.ramsdale.org/legend.htm
    The Link to Celtic Mythology

Formerly, it was thought that the Arthurian legend was the work of several inventive poets and romancers of the Middle Ages. The generally accepted theory now is that Arthurian legend developed out of stories of Celtic mythology. The most archaic form in which these occur in British sources is the Welsh Mabinogion, but much of Irish mythology is palpably identical with Arthurian romance. It is not certain how or where (in Wales or in those parts of northern Britain inhabited by Brythonic-speaking Celts) this legend originated or whether the figure Arthur was based on a historical person.

  5. His father was a king named Uther Pendragon, who fell in love with Lady Igraine. They needed the help of Merlin, a powerful wizard, to have a baby. However when Arthur was born, his mother died; His father followed shortly. After this tragedy, young Arthur was sent to live with a knight named Ector when he was still an infant. When he grew up, he found a gleaming sword stuck in a stone, one that he had heard about in many tales. He was told that the man who could pull it out was the true king and when he succeeded in pulling the sword out, he proved his merit as King and his right to the throne. Therefore, he claimed the title and became King of Britain. I just got this off of wiki.(not sure if we a can copy and paste, yet i did so...) sofia

  6. I have learnt from the Arthurian legends we've been looking at about the different variations/pictures of Excalibur with Arthur. Some show he is pulling it out of a stone, some show it being somewhere which Arthur has to go and get it etc. I've also learnt where the legend come s from and clues which represent this.
I found a good website to back up my evidence and knowledge to research about.

  7. To summarise, King Arthur is only a little legend told in the late 5th early 6th centuries but it has lived on 1500 years later, where we still are making films, books and graphic novels about it. As it was made so early on, no-one really knows the original story as no-one wrote it down, it was just passed on from generation to generation as an 'over the campfire' kind of tale. As this tale was passed on it could be exaggerated ever so slightly everytime, which means every time any media of this is published, it is debatable to be true or not. There are so many versions such as Excalibur and The Sword In The Stone that we do not know if its true or not. (I got some snipets of the information from Wiki but the rest was from my own knowledge!) ~Mia D

  8. This is what i Found on:
    http://www.ramsdale.org/legend.htm

Although there are innumerable variations of the Arthurian legend, the basic story has remained the same. Arthur was the illegitimate son of Uther Pendragon, king of Britain, and Igraine, the wife of Gorlois of Cornwall.

After the death of Uther, Arthur, who had been reared in secrecy, won acknowledgment as king of Britain by successfully withdrawing a sword from a stone.
Merlin, the court magician, then revealed the new king's parentage. Arthur, reigning in his court at Camelot, proved to be a noble king and a mighty warrior. He was the possessor of the miraculous sword Excalibur, given to him by the mysterious Lady of the Lake.

At Arthur's death Sir Bedivere threw Excalibur into the lake; a hand rose from the water, caught the sword, and disappeared.

Another sword, sometimes mistakenly identified with Excalibur, was drawn from a stone by Arthur to prove his royalty.

  9. The story of the Sword in the Stone is a story about Arthur's claim to the throne of Britain. According to legend, the Sword was Uther's sword, the sword of the High King of Britain. After Uther's death there is no known heir and the barons are fighting among each other who is to be the next High King of Britain.
Merlin, who was Uther counselor, has the sollution: he takes Uther's sword and with his magic, he runs it into a rock. The onw man who is able to draw the sword from the stone again will be the rightfull heir. Many have tried: Lot, Uriens, even Leodegrance and many more, but no one was able to draw the sword.Until one day Sir Ector and his sons Kay and Arthur (not knowing he is not Ector's real son but fostered by him) come to the place where the sword is captured in the rock, they come for a tournament. Arthur, being squirl to Ector and Kay, has to get Kay a new sword for his one is broken. He passes the rock and draws the sword, which he brings to Ector and Kay. Next, confusion is great, for how could this boy draw the sword from the stone.
Then Merlin makes his entrance again and declares that Arthur is Uther's son. To proof that he places the sword back in the stone and dares anyone to draw it. Again no one succeeds, but Arthur. And so he became High King of Britain at a very young age.
